Once again, Ash was alone as he traveled to the new Sinnoh region on his quest to catch more Pokémon.

He meets Dawn, the determined Pokémon Coordinator who aspires to be the best, just like her mother Johanna.

Brock, as usual, returned to Ash.

Turtwig

Turtwig was the first forerunner of the Sinnoh region.

Its name literally means turtle wig.

Shaped like a turtle, Turtwig has a brown shell on its back, made of earth.

A healthy Turtwig's bark should always be moist.

Turtwig evolved into Grotle.

Turtwig was the second Pokémon that Ash caught in this new area.

It often breaks up fights between wild Pokémon and is extremely protective of its new friend, Pikachu.

When trying to show affection, Turtwig often clung to Ash's head, refusing to move.

However, as it develops, it becomes slow and severe.

Chimchar

Chimchar was the first fire.

Its name literally means burning chimpanzee.

Taking the form of an orange and yellow chimpanzee, it often has a flaming tail.

Chimchar evolved into Monferno.

Ash's Chimchar originally belonged to Coach Paul.

Chimchar was frequently bullied, and Paul set up his other Pokémon to attack the poor creature.

Paul abandoned him, releasing him in front of Ash, who immediately offered him a position with his team.

He quickly became a fierce competitor, often angry when he met his former coach Paul.

Ash also helps Chimchar overcome her fears with Pokémon Zangoose.

Piplup

Piplup is the type of water.

Its names can mean pip (a baby bird's stage of development) and plop (water).

However it could mean, flip-flop (meaning the sound of rain falling on the ground).

Piplup bears closely resemble penguins, including the button-up on the front.

They have a sense of pride and generally don't like to receive food from humans.

Piplup evolves into Prinplup.

This is a beginner Pokémon that Ash does not own.

Piplup is Dawn's main partner and is responsible for winning two Ribbons in competitions.

Dawn's Piplup doesn't want to evolve, but Dawn fully supports her decision and even found an Everstone to help stop the evolution for as long as she wants.
